At McLain Construction, we believe the most meaningful homes are the ones that tell a story. Every now and then, a project comes along that allows us to weave a piece of local history directly into the fabric of a home, and this one is a perfect example.
For this custom home in Estes Park, the homeowners had a unique vision rooted in one of the town’s most iconic landmarks: the Estes Park Aerial Tramway. With the home’s sweeping views of the tram ascending and descending Prospect Mountain, it’s a daily backdrop that never gets old. That view became more than just scenery; it became part of the home’s identity. The homeowners even incorporated the aerial tram into a custom logo for their house, tying the design back to the landscape in a personal and lasting way.

Repurposing History
The Estes Park Aerial Tramway, which first opened in 1955, has carried visitors to the top of Prospect Mountain for decades, offering panoramic views of Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. As one of the longest-operating tramways of its kind in the United States, it holds a nostalgic place in the hearts of both locals and visitors.
Over the years, maintenance and upgrades have required the replacement of original components including sections of the tram’s heavy-duty cable. Rather than letting those pieces fade into obscurity, this new build gave new life to a portion of that history.

The homeowners envisioned a meaningful way to incorporate a piece of Estes Park history into their home by using a section of the original aerial tram cable as the exterior cable railing. McLain Construction’s owner, Phil, immediately embraced the idea. Without hesitation he hitched up a flatbed trailer and made his way to the Estes Park Aerial Tramway to retrieve a section of the historic cable, bringing their vision to life in a truly one-of-a-kind way. The tramway’s cables are 1 1/4- inch steel, capable of withstanding 25 tons of tension. The result is subtle but incredibly meaningful. A design feature that blends seamlessly with the home’s mountain-modern aesthetic while carrying a story that runs deep.

Where Craftsmanship Meets Storytelling
From a distance the railing looks functional and well-suited to the architecture, but up close it becomes something more. The repurposed cable stands as a tribute to Estes Park’s past connecting the home not just to its views, but to the history behind them. It’s these kinds of details that elevate a home from well-built to truly one-of-a-kind.
A Home That Reflects Its Surroundings
Building in mountain communities like Estes Park comes with a responsibility and an opportunity to design homes that feel rooted in their environment. In this case that meant honoring a landmark that has defined the Estes Park skyline for generations. When the opportunity arose to take that connection a step further, we knew it was something special.
By incorporating a piece of the aerial tramway into the home’s landscape itself, this home captures what we strive for in every build: thoughtful design, quality craftsmanship, and a connection to a place that goes beyond the surface. Because the best homes don’t just sit in their surroundings. They belong to them.
